Brewood Wake
Way back in history, when the canal system was a major form of transport, Brewood used to be a very busy market town with a thriving cottage industry. When the railway system by-passed Brewood, Wolverhampton became the main town of the area.
The Famous Brewood Wake was held in Medieval times to commemorate St. Mary’s birthday on the Sunday nearest September 8th. and used to attract thousands of people from far and wide. It was primarily an agricultural event organised by the farming community. As the 20th. century developed Brewood became more of a quiet commuter village but the wake is still held, albeit every four years.
In September 2005 our club organised the Wake. The weather was very kind to us and it was a great success. Many people dressed in "period costume" although the "period" was left to individual choice. The following photographs were kindly sent to us by a visitor from Germany, Susanne Bolus, who was travelling past Brewood on a canal boat on the day of the wake.
